STUDENTS’ VOICES

2024-2025

Elias David Aion FRIEDMAN (USA). "The Athens MA offers an opportunity to learn the practice of ancient philosophy from world-class experts. It is both a great preparation for PhD programs, and a fulfilling experience for anyone who wishes to deepen their understanding of the subject."

Zhiming LI (China). "Athens is a perfect city for doing ancient philosophy, and Athens MA in Ancient Philosophy is an even better starting point for exploring the academic world."

Dimitrios NIKOU (Greece). "I will be forever grateful for all the valuable lessons I received while attending the program, and I will treasure the memories I made at the time. I would recommend the program to anyone interested in ancient philosophy."

Michael TECKLENBORG (Germany). "The course was a fantastic experience. The classes are organized by historical periods. This gives a good insight into the development of philosophy – from its early beginnings in the Greek city-states of Asia Minor to the philosophical foundations of Christianity in late antiquity. We study in a small, fixed group of 15 students from 7 different countries. We had three to four regular classes per week, each lasting three hours. These were always real highlights. Of course, they require intensive preparation: studying the original texts (in English), reading secondary literature, preparing short presentations, and writing an essay for each course. The professors are all excellent and internationally experienced. They encouraged us to engage in in-depth and often passionate discussions about the understanding of the texts, their interpretation, their historical background and contemporary relevance."

Stephan UNGER (Austria). "An amazing program! Every Professor is top-notch, internationally renowned, and the courses in the curriculum are perfectly aligned with each other! A unique experience in the city where Ancient Philosophy has its roots! I am highly recommending attending this truly ingenious program, which was put together by these very dedicated Professors! Every minute of each class in invaluable and provides deep insights into the most important aspects of Ancient Philosophy. A truly life-changing experience!"

Yanan XIE (China). "These ten months were one of the most meaningful and rewarding experiences of my life! The focused study of ancient Greek philosophy, guided by professors with diverse perspectives, was truly enriching. Their feedback on my essays was always thoughtful and encouraging. What made the experience even more special was the people. I’m deeply grateful for the kindness and support of both professors and friends, and for the unforgettable moments we shared in Athens, from deep discussions to museum visits to lovely dinners!"

The professors are extremely knowledgeable in their fields and the invitation of more guest scholars really showed the great quality of this MA. The ability to debate with the other students, who all have different backgrounds, interpretations and ideas. I got motivated to think differently and work as hard as possible."

Julia ZGURZYNSKI (USA). "One of the program's strengths is the way it integrates contemporary scholarship, both in coursework and by inviting the students to many philosophy conferences. Thanks to this program, I have now read and written about articles by dozens of current scholars from around the world, and have even listened to some of them present at conferences. As a result, I feel much more informed about the topics and questions currently being researched in ancient philosophy, as well as the best ways to approach ancient texts."
